How to Start Sea Swimming

Starting something new for the first time is often daunting, and sea swimming is the same. It can be quite a challenge but i’ve seen so many people over time go from fear of the water to confident sea swimmers. Here are some tips on how to begin:

  1. Ask the experts

When I started sea swimming in the winter I asked people who had been sea swimming for a long time. They gave me tips on tides and currents and how to deal with the risk of the cold. Without this knowledge I wouldn’t have progressed so quickly. I’d always say in any new skill, ask people who know more than you. Now that i’m an open water swim coach I would suggest people have a lesson so they know all the safety aspects before they set foot into the water.

2. Read about Sea Swimming

Just like asking experts, I would say checking out valuable content before you swim is good. Read up on terms such as cold water shock, afterdrop and learn about gear such as neoprene gloves and boots and tow floats.

3. Go For it

Knowledge is key, but don’t overthink. It’s time to get down for a dip in conditions which are safe. Whether you swim in lake, river or sea if in doubt don’t head out. Stick to a calm water or protected bay and be observant of what’s happening. Stay within your depth and if possible get a buddy to go with you, or at least get someone to watch on land.
